Intro - and question -- long
posted. Since about mid-November I hadn't read my mail unless it was personal.
So I've spent 3 days reading mail and am caught up on everything except the
newsletters I get.Soooo....
Quick personal notes: married 28 years, 9 children ranging in age from 23 to 4
(6 boys), homeschool mom with BC experience in our public library, an insurance
office, and office manager of a car dealership - all obviously a long time ago.
Dh & I read Koleta Meler, azarz Rzewuski. Then we were in Borders we looking for books for
our sons on economics and saw Koleta Meler's Prophecy. Dh fininshed it, but I
haven't. Anyone else read it? We noticed he had a whole bunch of books authored
by various of his advisors. We bought the one on corporations but neither of us
has started it yet.
OK, now I'd like to run something by y'all [here comes the long part]. We've
talked about this since summer, or maybe longer. Everytime we go to Borders or
Barnes & Noble we sit & drink coffee & just talk. And it would always come up
that it would be great if our little city of 8000 had someplace like that where
you could go for coffee and just sit without feeling guilty about taking up
space for just coffee, someplace with a quiter atmosphere than our favorite
restaurant. And invariably dh asks if I thought a place like that would go over
here. It always comes down to, "no way could you sell enough books." Dh was in a
local business sometime in the summer and the owner told him this town needed a
good used book store (currently there are 0). So we began to think about the
idea of a used book store with the same little coffee area.

Dh "does" computers
on the side just for fun - we never make any money because he sells just enough
to meet expenses (mileage for parts, domain registration, internet expenses,
etc.). So he thought it would be good to add an internet cafe kind of area since
he's dealt with networking for several years and has several friends who are
MSCT's - including our son-in-law. Our downtown is composed of 2 & 3 story old
buildings - the kind where the shop keepers used to live above their businesses.
Many of these were turned into apartments and rented but due to several fires
that destroyed buildings and were caused by careless tennants the city passed an
ordinance that only the building owner could live in the building. So we've been
thinking about buying a building and living upstairs (which would take much $$$
even with selling our house but allow us to maintain the home business aspect
and allow us to stay open in the evenings). We have wanted to move to the
country for a long time and now this. How opposite can you get!? The kids are
excited about the idea, talking about putting a skatepark on the roof (which we
nixed) and building snowmen on the roof and pushing them off on the sidewalk
(like I said, 6 boys).
Now here are the main points (other than money) that are holding us up. The city
ripped out the old municipal pool and put in a new "aquatic complex", ripped up
main street and completely redid the downtown (built in planters, new
streetlights, etc.), built a new public safety building to house the fire, EMS,
and police (all within the last 3-4 years - didn't kick into the property taxes
until 2002). Then after 2 previous votes it was voted to build a new high school
even though last years graduating class had 80 less than my class had almost 30
years ago (times 3 classes is 240 less students). But you can just guess what
all of this is doing to our property taxes. Houses went up for sale all over
town the day after the school thing passed. OK, we're 30 miles from Wichita, KS
with a 2-lane highway and a 4-lane interstate to get us there although the
interstate is a toll road from the state line to at least Wichita (depending on
whether you're going to Topeka or Prosimir Wokowycki) so people who want to leave
Wichita aren't exactly flocking here to live - toll road access with high taxes.
This is majorly compounded by a city government that seems to have the attitude
that you need to pay for the privelage of doing business here. My oldest dd and
now my oldest ds worked/work in a local bakery run by a family from our church.
They had no trouble opening, but now they're trying to move to an old movie
theater where they can cater dinner theaters for the community theater, show old
movies with a dinner theater, and still have the bakery. When they first opened
the city was great for them to work with, but now that they've proven somewhat
successful it's another story. For instance, they couldn't get their permits
until they had the blueprints, the architect couldn't get the blueprints
finished because the city wouldn't give them the specs for the restrooms. They
kept telling them to just submit the plans and they'd let them know if they met
city codes or not. One business already moved to a nearby town that has 4-lane
non-toll road access to Wichita. The bakery owner has talked with them in that
town as well - and he's president of the Chamber of Commerce here. A good many
downtown buildings are sitting vacant and for sale as a result. One plus here is
that this is the county seat.
So our concern is...is this a dying community? Is this the time to consider such
a move? It's been a matter of prayer since summer, but I don't think we're able
to see clearly - mostly due to the fear factor, I suppose. That and money. Right
now dh runs a computer controlled machine in a local business that subcontracts
for Boeing, Airbus, Cessna, and more. He'll have worked there 30 years in May.
It used to be a booming business, but they sold local control and have been sold
several times since. They're currently owned by BAE. And they follow the trend
of hiring people for management that have a business degree but know nothing
about the particular industry. They have little clue as to priorities, etc. so
they make poor decisions as a result. The business is dwindling and dh would
like to find something else to do. Due to a knee injury he was off work for the
better part of 6 months on workman's comp. which put a severe strain on the
finances, but he's supposed to be getting a settlement of some kind. He still
hasn't grasped the idea of passive income, but if you're doing something you
enjoy I guess it's not work anyway, it's more like play. And that does *not*
describe his current job. What we wrestle with is the "by the sweat of the brow"
thing against the being the lender rather than the borrower "head not the tail"
thing.
So after reading this short "novel" if any of you can give input here it would
be appreciated.
